519 die in road accidents in 2019

Sierra Leone Road Services Authority (SLRSA) in 2019 recoded five hundred and nineteen (519) deaths in road accident across the country.

Ambrose Tucker, Research and Development Manager at SLRSA in an interview on Tuesday 21st January 2020 said the aforementioned amount entails two hundred and fourteen male (41%), two hundred and sixty-six Female (51%) and thirty nine children (8%) respectively.

He furthered that out of the two hundred and sixty six (266) vehicles that were involved seventy five people had slight injury and fifty two incurred serious injury.

He stated that there is a variance of one hundred and ninety nine (199) road accidents between 2019 and 2018 which recorded four hundred sixty five (465) road accidents.

Ambrose also pointed out that most of the accidents occurred in the month of September and that they observed that the said accidents were due to human errors, mechanical faults and weather.

He said the better way to curb road accident is to do a continuous sensitization of drivers about road safety issues, installation of traffic bill boards, training of drivers in both practical and theoretical tests and an enforcement mechanism by both Sierra Leone police and road safety corps for lawless drivers.
