Sierra Leone Named in Draft U.S. Travel Ban Proposal

Must Read

Sierra Leone has been included in a draft proposal for a new U.S. travel ban, placing it on an “orange” list of 10 countries facing potential restrictions, according to a news published by The New York Times on Friday, 14th March 2025.

This designation would limit travel from Sierra Leone to the United States but would not result in a complete ban.

While certain affluent business travelers may still be permitted entry, individuals applying for immigrant or tourist visas could face significant hurdles.

Additionally, citizens from Sierra Leone would be required to undergo in-person interviews as part of the visa application process.

Sierra Leone has a history of U.S. visa restrictions. In September 2017, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security imposed sanctions on the country due to its failure to accept deported nationals. In response, the U.S. Embassy in Freetown suspended the issuance of B visas—temporary visitor visas for business or tourism—to officials from Sierra Leone’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and immigration authorities.

In September 2020, all immigrant visa processing for Sierra Leonean citizens was halted under Section 243(d) of the Immigration and Nationality Act, citing continued concerns over repatriation cooperation. These restrictions were lifted in April 2021, restoring the processing of both immigrant and most non-immigrant visas.

However, in August 2023, the U.S. introduced new visa restrictions targeting individuals accused of undermining democracy during Sierra Leone’s 2023 elections, particularly those linked to electoral manipulation and voter suppression.

Sierra Leone’s inclusion in the draft travel ban signals ongoing concerns within the U.S. government regarding governance and immigration cooperation. As the proposal remains under review, its final details may change before any official implementation.
