By Mohamed Kamara

The National Secretary General of the Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ), Alhaji Manika Kamara, delivered a powerful address at the Association’s Annual Iftar Programme held on Thursday evening. The event, a cornerstone in the SLAJ calendar, brought together journalists, religious leaders, and key members of the media community to celebrate the holy month of Ramadan.

Opening his remarks with warm Ramadan greetings, Alhaji Kamara expressed best wishes to Muslim colleagues, praying that the sacred month brings peace, spiritual renewal, and blessings to all. He also conveyed the sincere apologies of SLAJ President, Ahmed Sahid Nasralla, who was unable to attend due to prior engagements.

“Though our esteemed President is not with us, it is an honor for me to represent him and address this important gathering,” Manika stated.

The theme for this year’s Iftar, “Ramadan in the Digital Age: The Positive and Negative Impacts of Digital Technology on Ramadan,” was highlighted as particularly timely.

Alhaji Manika Kamara acknowledged the increasing influence of technology on everyday life, including the observance of religious practices during Ramadan. While technology provides opportunities for learning and engagement with Islamic teachings, he warned that it can also present distractions that may detract from the true essence of the holy month, which includes reflection, self-discipline, and a deeper connection with Allah.

“As journalists, it is our responsibility to use technology to share credible and positive messages, especially during this sensitive electioneering period. Let us remain true to the principles of truth, fairness, and responsible journalism, serving our members and the people of Sierra Leone.”

Manika also took a moment to acknowledge the Christian community, who are currently observing Lent, recognizing the shared values of faith, sacrifice, and devotion between the two religious observances. His remarks underscored the importance of religious tolerance and unity, both within the profession and society at large.

A special tribute was paid to Sheikh Farouk, who has been a long-time supporter of the SLAJ Iftar program, for his enlightening lectures on the significance of Ramadan. The SLAJ scribe expressed gratitude for Sheikh Farouk’s consistent efforts to deepen the understanding of Ramadan among the attendees.

The Secretary General also conveyed apologies on behalf of the Honourable Vice President of Sierra Leone, Dr. Mohamed Juldeh Jalloh, who was unable to attend due to state commitments. The Vice President has been a key figure in SLAJ’s annual Iftar for several years, and his continued support was acknowledged with appreciation.

The evening’s event saw journalists from various media outlets come together, fostering not only professional camaraderie but also promoting interfaith harmony within the media sector. Manika concluded by commending the event’s organizers for their dedication in bringing journalists together to strengthen their bonds as a professional body.

“May Allah accept our fasts, prayers, and acts of kindness during this holy month. Ramadan Mubarak to you all,” he said in closing.

The Iftar program was a poignant reminder of the shared values of unity, peace, and devotion, highlighting the importance of faith in strengthening the role of journalists in the country.
