In a decisive operation against the trafficking of illicit substances, the Sierra Leone Police (SLP) have intercepted a significant quantity of suspected tramadol during a targeted raid in the Tokeh community on the Western Area Peninsula of Freetown.

The seizure, which resulted from an intelligence-led, multi-agency operation, is being hailed as a major breakthrough in the ongoing fight against illegal drug circulation in the region.

Led by the Goderich Police Division under the command of Chief Superintendent Alimamy Sesay, and backed by personnel from the Operational Support Division (OSD), General Duty, and the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), the operation was initiated following credible intelligence reports.

Despite facing initial challenges in pinpointing the exact location of the drug stash, the team’s persistence paid off. Officers uncovered 16 gross and 5 packets of suspected tramadol, with each packet containing 250 milligrams of the potent prescription drug—often misused as a recreational substance.

The recovered narcotics were immediately transferred to the Transnational Organised Crime Unit (TOCU), where Chief Superintendent Mohamed K. Allieu is leading ongoing investigations to track down the networks behind the trafficking.

This successful bust is the latest in a series of operations under the leadership of Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) Sylvester M.N. Koroma, Regional Commander for Freetown West. AIG Koroma has been praised for his proactive stance on intelligence-led policing and his efforts to stem the tide of drug-related crime through strategic coordination and community engagement.

“We are sending a clear message—illicit drug trafficking has no place in our communities. We will continue to work tirelessly, using intelligence and partnerships to protect our people,” said AIG Koroma.

The Tokeh operation follows closely on the heels of a similar tramadol seizure on Taylor Street, signalling a rising momentum in the SLP’s nationwide clampdown on drug networks.

The police have encouraged continued public cooperation, emphasizing that community tips and vigilance remain critical to sustaining success in tackling transnational crime and preserving public health.

As investigations continue, the Sierra Leone Police reaffirm their zero-tolerance approach to drug trafficking and their unwavering commitment to ensuring safer, drug-free communities across the country.
