Freetown, 26 June 2025 – Sierra Leone’s Peoples Party (SLPP) has relocated its National Young Generation Council (NYGC) elections to Freetown following disruptions during the initial vote held in Bo on Saturday, 21 June.
In an official statement issued Thursday, the party said the environment in Bo failed to support a peaceful and credible electoral process. What was meant to be a democratic opportunity for young party members was instead marred by incidents that halted the proceedings.
“The SLPP unequivocally condemns any form of violence, intimidation, or physical altercation in the conduct of our party’s affairs,” the statement read. “Such actions are fundamentally at odds with the values of respect, discipline, and tolerance that define our political tradition.”
While an internal review is ongoing, the party reaffirmed its commitment to democratic principles, youth empowerment, and peaceful civic engagement. It also commended aspirants and delegates who maintained restraint during the disruptions.
To ensure transparency and restore trust in the process, the party has rescheduled the elections for National Young Generation Leader, Deputy Leader, and Secretary. The polls will now take place on Sunday, 29 June 2025, at the SLPP National Headquarters in Freetown.
Only accredited young generation delegates, aspirants, and their official agents will be allowed to participate.
The party says appropriate measures are being taken to ensure the elections proceed in a secure, transparent, and respectful manner, urging members to stay focused on unity and democratic engagement.
