Freetown, 26 June 2025 – Francis Alpha Kallon has been elected as the new Leader of the Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) National Young Generation Council (NYGC), following a closely contested vote held at the party’s headquarters in Freetown.
Kallon secured 89 votes, narrowly defeating his opponent Maada K. Kemokai, who received 74 out of a total of 164 ballots cast. His election marks a significant moment for the party’s youth wing, which continues to assert greater influence in internal politics.
However, the elections were not without setbacks. The race for Deputy Leader was suspended due to disputes and confusion during the process, leaving the post vacant for now. The party’s secretariat is expected to determine the next steps for resolving the matter.
In another development, the Secretary General position went uncontested. A petition had challenged the eligibility of the incumbent on the grounds of age, alleging he was over the 35-year limit. The post was retained without competition.
Despite these challenges, Kallon’s victory was welcomed by many party members and observers, who see it as a sign of renewed energy and leadership among SLPP’s younger base. The party had also piloted a digital voting system for accredited delegates, an effort to modernize its internal elections, though only the Leader position was conclusively filled.
