Freetown, Sierra Leone – July 9, 2025 – The Government of Sierra Leone has officially launched the United Nations-European Union Spotlight Initiative, a multi-year global partnership aimed at eliminating all forms of violence against women and girls.
Key stakeholders gathered for the launch, including the Chief Minister, Minister of Gender and Children’s Affairs, UN agencies, European Union officials, Rainbo Initiative, civil society groups, traditional leaders, members of Parliament, and development partners, all united behind a common goal.

UNDP Sierra Leone, one of the lead implementing partners, described the initiative as a “transformative effort” to strengthen evidence-based laws and policies and support survivors of gender-based violence.
“We are committed to making Sierra Leone a country free from violence against women and girls, and I believe we will deliver on this promise,” said Chief Minister Dr. David Moinina Sengeh during his remarks.

Calling attention to the global scale of gender-based violence, UN Resident Coordinator Madam Seraphine Wakana stated, “This is not just a programme; it is a powerful partnership to protect women and girls. Globally, one in three women experiences physical or sexual violence. Our collective resolve is to ensure every woman can live free from fear, abuse, and violence.”

Spotlight Initiative activities will focus on prevention, survivor services, legal reform, and shifting harmful social norms through community engagement.
Marking a significant step in Sierra Leone’s national response, the launch signals renewed commitment to building a future where women and girls live free from violence, fear, and discrimination.
