Tecno Spark Lands Man Behind Bars

Must Read

Justice was swift and firm in Kenema last week as two men were handed 12-month prison sentences in separate cases of theft and fraudulent conversion.

Magistrate Hadiru Daboh of Court No. 1 in Kenema didn’t hesitate to send Mohamed Rogers, a man with no fixed address, straight to the Sierra Leone Correctional Centre. Rogers pleaded guilty to fraudulently converting a Tecno Spark 7 phone for his own use; an act in violation of Section 20(1)(iv)(b) of the 1916 Larceny Act.

The incident occurred on June 16 at Dorwaila, within Kenema city limits. Rogers admitted guilt and begged the court for leniency, but Magistrate Daboh instead handed him a year behind bars, unless he pays full compensation for the stolen phone.

In a rural twist to urban crime, farmer Yusuf Juana from Potehun Village in Nongowa Chiefdom was also sentenced to 12 months in jail. He was convicted for stealing a quantity of cassava tubers from his community on the same date, under Section 2 of the Larceny Act.

Juana, too, pleaded guilty and asked for mercy, but Magistrate Daboh made clear that agricultural theft would not be taken lightly, especially in farming communities that rely on their crops for survival.

Both prosecutions were led by officers from the Legal and Justice Support Department of the Kenema Police Division: PC 1536 Vonja Thomas handled the Rogers case, while Inspector Alphan Samuel Musa prosecuted Juana.

As petty crimes continue to challenge both urban and rural peace, Kenema’s judiciary sent a clear message last week; theft – whether digital or agricultural -won’t be treated as business as usual.
