History is being rewritten for women’s cricket in Sierra Leone, as the Senior Women’s National Team has sealed a place in Division-1 after a commanding performance at the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup Africa Division 2 Qualifier, currently underway in Gaborone, Botswana.
The Ladies Patriots booked their promotion in style, winning four straight matches, including a crucial victory over Malawi on Thursday, which ended a long-standing spell of missing out on Division-1 cricket.
The qualifier campaign began with back-to-back wins that saw the Sierra Leonean side quickly rise to the top of the group standings. On Wednesday, the team faced host nation Botswana and emerged victorious by five wickets, setting the tone for their high-stakes clash with Malawi.
In what was essentially a promotion decider, the team kept their composure and defeated Malawi by six wickets, officially qualifying for Division-1 and marking one of the greatest achievements in the country’s cricketing history.
The final match of the tournament will see Sierra Leone take on Rwanda this Saturday; a gold medal clash that could see them lift their second major trophy in just three months, following their dominant run at the 2025 NWACC Women’s Championship earlier this year, also held in Botswana.
Individual Brilliance Powers the Team
The tournament has also seen individual brilliance from Sierra Leone’s top players. Emma Kamara is currently leading the run-scoring chart with 134 runs in just three innings, boasting an incredible average of 67.00. Her performance has made her a strong contender for the tournament’s Top Run Scorer award.
Meanwhile, team captain Aminata Kamara is showing explosive form, sitting at the top of the batting strike rate leaderboard with 156.36 over three innings. Her aggressive leadership and fearless play have inspired the team to keep pushing boundaries.
A Golden Year for Women’s Cricket
Sierra Leone’s women’s team has already proven itself as a rising powerhouse in African cricket. Their qualification into Division-1 is not just a victory, but a symbol of resilience, talent, and strategic growth of the sport in the country. With sights now set on Rwanda in the final, the team is determined to turn their golden opportunity into another historic title.
Cricket fans across Sierra Leone and the continent will be watching as the Ladies Patriots take one more stride toward cementing their legacy on Saturday. A win over Rwanda would make 2025 a double-gold year — and a defining chapter in Sierra Leone’s cricketing story.
