Sierra Leone has officially launched the Criminal Procedure Act 2024, a landmark reform aimed at modernizing the country’s justice system and aligning it with international standards.

The launch ceremony at the High Court in Freetown brought together senior officials from the judiciary, executive, and law enforcement. All emphasized their shared commitment to building a more efficient and equitable legal framework.

Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Alpha Sesay, described the legislation as the outcome of a “20-year journey,” acknowledging the persistence of stakeholders who worked toward its passage. He stressed that the Act would streamline justice delivery and pledged to personally oversee its implementation so that it serves all Sierra Leoneans.

Inspector General of Police, William Fayia Sellu, hailed the introduction of the Act as “a historic day” for the nation. He noted that the police, as a central pillar of the justice sector, have already undergone training to ensure officers are prepared to apply the new legal procedures effectively.

Chief Justice Komba Kamanda highlighted the Act’s strong foundation in human rights principles and praised its role in replacing outdated practices. He expressed confidence that the reforms would deliver greater transparency and fairness while calling on all stakeholders to work together to ensure its success.

The ceremony concluded with a performance by the Sierra Leone Police Band, marking what officials described as the start of a transformative era for the country’s criminal justice system.
