Sierra Leone and Russia have a multifaceted relationship that spans decades, characterized by diplomatic, economic, and cultural exchanges. While the geographical distance between the two countries is vast, bilateral relations have been marked by cooperative ventures and mutual interests. 2025 marks the 63rd anniversary of establishing diplomatic relations between Russia and Sierra Leone.

Despite the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991, Russia has continued to maintain and develop its relationship with Sierra Leone. Cooperation between our two nations has seen a shift in focus from the friendly traditional manner to a more practical and mutually beneficial engagement. For almost 30 years, i.e. (from 1963 to 1992), the Embassy of the Russian Federation was based in Sierra Leone until its relocation to Conakry, Guinea.

Both our countries are bound by the desire to ensure the security and well-being of their citizens, as well as by commitment to interact based on the principles of equality and mutual respect, with the aim of further collaboration in the areas of Health, the Environment, Education, Mines, and Trade.

The opening of a Russian House in 2024 in Sierra Leone shows Russia’s commitment to further strengthen and deepen cultural, educational, and bilateral relations, and we look forward to the reopening of the Russian Embassy in Sierra Leone this year.

In the multilateral arena, Sierra Leone and Russia engage with each other on various international platforms, including the United Nations. Our relationship is built on mutual respect and shared interests. While challenges must be overcome, the potential for future collaboration is immense. By leveraging their strengths and exploring new avenues for cooperation, Sierra Leone and Russia can continue to foster a partnership that benefits both nations.

On behalf of the President, Government, the people of Sierra Leone, and the Embassy of Sierra Leone in the Russian Federation, I wish the President, the Government, and the People of Russia and Sierra Leone continued peace, good health, and prosperity.
