At Sierra Leone Writers Series (SLWS), our mission is to identify, encourage, and support writers of Sierra Leonean origin, publishing and disseminating their works both within Sierra Leone and globally.
We are honoured to have published the memoir—Jollof Boy: The Early Years—of Syl Cheney-Coker, a distinguished Sierra Leonean writer known for his powerful exploration of exile, identity, and the African experience. His literary career spans poetry collections like “The Blood in The Desert’s Eyes,” “Stone Child & Other Poems,” and the revised “Road to Jamaica,” as well as his acclaimed novel “The Last Harmattan of Alusine Dunbar,” which won the Commonwealth Writers’ Prize in 1991.
Our commitment to our authors includes:
• Global Reach: By publishing electronically, our books are available on Amazon, allowing for worldwide ordering.
• Author Support: We provide a transparent royalty system, paying authors 10% of the amounts received from Amazon, with reports and payments issued when earnings reach a minimum of $100.
• Local Presence: In Sierra Leone, we have an SLWS bookshop at Warima village after Masiaka on the Bo Road, and our books are also stocked at SmartLink Bookshop, Turay Building, Congo Cross and Blessed Farouk Enterprise, Circular Road in Freetown.
• Collaborative Publishing: We are open to co-publishing arrangements with both local and international publishers to broaden the reach and impact of our publications.
• Quality Assurance: All manuscripts undergo a rigorous peer-review process to ensure high-quality publications.
We take pride in our role in nurturing Sierra Leonean literature and are delighted to see our authors, like Syl Cheney-Coker, receive their published works with joy and satisfaction. Their success is our success, and we remain dedicated to supporting and celebrating their literary contributions.
Please visit our dynamic SLWS website (slwritersseries.org) for information on our submission, review and publication policies and guidelines. You can also view details of hundreds of books we have published since 2001 when SLWS was founded.
As our contribution to promoting literature from and on Sierra Leone, we do not take payment for publishing. We however insist on peer-reviewed, fully edited book manuscripts.
