Faulty Electrical Appliances Blamed for State House Fire

Must Read

Preliminary investigations have identified faulty electrical appliances and poor wiring systems as the likely cause of the fire that broke out at the State House in Freetown on Saturday, 13th April 2025.

Chief Fire Officer Nazir Kamanda Bongay reported that the National Fire Force received a distress call at 3:05 p.m. and responded within 15 minutes, deploying two newly commissioned fire engines. The operation was later reinforced by additional fire commanders from the Western Area.

Firefighters battled the blaze for nearly four hours before bringing it under control. No injuries or casualties were reported.

The fire severely damaged the 3rd and 4th floors of the West Wing. Investigators found evidence of electrical appliances left running, substandard extension cables, and outdated wiring systems—factors believed to have contributed to the incident.

Earlier, Vice President Dr. Mohamed Juldeh Jalloh visited the site on Sunday, inspecting the damaged areas and receiving a detailed briefing from emergency personnel. He also visited the unaffected Office of the President on the 2nd floor. Commending the swift response from all involved, Dr. Jalloh praised the coordinated efforts that prevented further escalation.

Following the inspection, the Vice President established a high-level Interagency Response Team comprising representatives from law enforcement, engineering experts, the Ministry of Works and Public Assets, and the Electricity Distribution and Supply Authority (EDSA). The team has been tasked with a full investigation, structural assessments, and development of a comprehensive recovery plan.

Daily situation briefings will be chaired by the Vice President, and an initial report is expected within one week. The government has assured the public of continued transparency and timely updates as recovery efforts progress.
