Sierra Leone’s hip-hop heavyweight Kao Denero has added another major accolade to his career, winning the Best Hip-Hop Artist title at the 2025 African Golden Awards held in Nairobi. The celebrated rapper won over some of the continent’s biggest names, including Ghana’s Sarkodie, South Africa’s Nasty C, Kenya’s Khaligraph Jones, and Nigeria’s MI Abaga.

The victory marks Kao Denero’s second win at the prestigious awards, further solidifying his status as one of Africa’s leading voices in hip-hop. Accepting the honor, he paid tribute to his fans and his country: “We keep making Sierra Leone proud globally. Thanks to all who voted. Big things come from small places.”

Kao Denero’s win is the latest in a series of milestones. His 2024 album Heroes received widespread acclaim and earned nominations at the Africa Entertainment Awards for Album of the Year and Best Hip-Hop Artist. The project drew praise from public figures, including Sierra Leone’s Anti-Corruption Commissioner, Francis Ben Kaifala, who hailed it as “world-class” and one of the finest examples of Sierra Leonean hip-hop artistry.

This 2025, Kao Denero swept three major categories at the National Entertainment Awards in Freetown, winning Best Male Artist of the Year, Best Hip-Hop Artist, and Best Hit Single for “Kenyatta.”

Beyond music, Kao Denero continues to serve as Sierra Leone’s Special Envoy for Entertainment and Investment—a role he’s held since 2021, where he champions the growth of the country’s creative industries and supports emerging talent.

Following his win in Nairobi, he shared a powerful message with supporters: “If you voted to help Sierra Leone secure this win, you’re a true patriot. Success is stronger than love.”

Kao Denero’s journey from Freetown to the continental stage is more than a personal victory—it’s a powerful symbol of Sierra Leone’s rising influence in African music.
