Guinea has reversed a media ban that barred coverage of suspended political parties, opening the door for broader opposition visibility as the country heads into a hotly contested constitutional referendum.
The media regulator had previously issued guidelines preventing journalists from reporting on parties facing dissolution or suspension.
According to AFP, the head of the High Authority of Communication (HAC), Boubacar Yacine Diallo, said in a note on Monday that journalists are now permitted to cover all political actors, provided they follow election campaign regulations and guarantee equal access to airtime and print space.
The referendum, set for September 21, is seen as a critical step toward a return to civilian rule after the military seized power in 2021. Earlier in August, the junta suspended the three main opposition parties, including those of former President Alpha Condé and ex–Prime Minister Cellou Dalein Diallo, from all political activity for 90 days.
