Guinea’s opposition leader, Aliou Bah, was on Tuesday sentenced to two years in prison for allegedly “insulting and defaming” junta leader General Mamady Doumbouya. Bah’s conviction for calling the National Committee of Reconciliation and Development (CNRD) “incompetent” has sparked concerns about freedom of speech under Doumbouya’s rule following the 2021 coup.
His lawyers denounce the trial as a threat to free expression, echoing broader complaints of repression against opposition figures.
Also, amidst international pressure, Doumbouya promised elections in 2025 in a New Year’s address to the nation but remained vague on details.
