The Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources on Friday, 28th February 2025, officially announces the conclusion of the one-month fishing ban on the artisanal fisheries sub-sector.
The closure, which lasted from February 1st to 28th, 2025, was implemented under Section 10 (2b) of the Fisheries and Aquaculture Act, 2018, to support the conservation of fish stocks and maintain the balance of marine ecosystems. The ministry explained in a notice that this measure aimed to facilitate the replenishment of fish populations, ensuring the long-term sustainability of the country’s fisheries resources.

As of midnight on 28th February 2025, artisanal fishing activities are permitted to resume without restrictions. The Ministry commends the artisanal fishing communities for their compliance and acknowledges the support of all stakeholders who contributed to the success of this initiative.
However, the Ministry urges fishers to continue practicing sustainable fishing methods and refrain from using illegal gear or engaging in harmful practices such as beach seining (draw chain fishing). To ensure adherence to regulations, the Ministry said it would continue rigorous monitoring and surveillance efforts to enforce compliance and protect marine resources.
