In a significant effort to restore peace in the Gorama Mende Chiefdom in Kenema District, the Ministry of Local Government and Community Affairs has appointed Chief Wahid Kallon as the new caretaker chief.

This appointment follows the suspension of Paramount Chief Madam Haja Mariama Gassama Kanja, who was accused of fostering division and conflict between the Muslim community and the Wonde Society members in the chiefdom.

The suspension was announced during a public gathering attended by community members, religious leaders, security personnel, and media representatives. Minister Ambassador Tamba Lamina addressed the unrest in the chiefdom, expressing concern over the paramount chief’s inability to unite the community, which had led to widespread dissatisfaction.

“The Gorama Mende Chiefdom should be a place of unity and harmony, not conflict,” Minister Lamina stated. He called on the community to rally behind Chief Wahid Kallon and work towards lasting peace.

Senior Section Chief John Layer expressed relief at the government’s decision, acknowledging the severe impact of the division. He noted that the unrest had torn apart families and displaced many. Chief Layer thanked the government for its timely intervention and assured that the community would support Chief Kallon in restoring peace.

Mammy Queen Mamie Marcathy, a prominent leader in the chiefdom, called the day a “blessing in disguise.” She highlighted the challenges faced by women and children during the unrest and thanked the minister for acting swiftly to resolve the issue.

Chief Wahid Kallon expressed his gratitude for the trust placed in him and emphasized the importance of honesty, unity, and collaboration for the community’s development. He promised to prioritize peace and draw on his experience in managing other chiefdoms, such as Kabondeh, Kpanga, and Jama Quee.

“I am here to serve you,” Chief Kallon said. “Let us work together to foster unity and leave behind division and discord.”

The event ended with heartfelt speeches from community leaders who reaffirmed their commitment to building unity and a prosperous future for the Gorama Mende Chiefdom. With the government monitoring the situation closely, there is hope that this appointment will lead to greater peace and development in the region.
