Nigeria’s Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) announced that it recovered nearly $500 million in proceeds of crime in 2024 as part of its ongoing anti-corruption efforts.
The recovery initiative aligns with the anti-graft campaign spearheaded by President Bola Tinubu’s administration. In addition to the financial recoveries, the EFCC seized over 931,000 metric tonnes of petroleum products, 975 properties, and company shares.
According to a report released on Monday, the commission also secured more than 4,000 criminal convictions last year—the highest since its establishment over two decades ago. Some of the recovered funds have been reinvested into government projects.
Nigeria has long grappled with systemic corruption, which many experts link to widespread poverty. The country currently ranks 140th out of 180 on Transparency International’s latest Corruption Perceptions Index.
