The Commissioner General of Sierra Leone’s National Revenue Authority (NRA), Jeneba J. Bangura, has been appointed to the United Nations (UN) Committee of Experts on International Cooperation in Tax Matters for the 2025–2029 term.
Her appointment, announced in a UN press release dated July 30, was made by UN Secretary-General António Guterres. Bangura becomes the second Sierra Leonean, and the first Sierra Leonean woman, in more than 20 years to serve on the prestigious global body.
She is ranked second among 25 leading tax professionals selected globally to guide the UN Committee’s work in advancing fair and development-focused international tax policy. The Committee supports countries in aligning tax systems with their national priorities and addressing challenges such as digital economy taxation, extractives, and wealth taxation.
Li Junhua, UN Under-Secretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs, emphasized the Committee’s value in promoting global collaboration: “The Committee helps countries work together to ensure their tax policies serve their development priorities. Countries may want to modernize their tax treaties to reflect today’s digital economy, ensure fair taxation in the extractives sector, or explore options for wealth taxation. The Committee provides a unique space where diverse experts can tackle frontier challenges together, drawing upon relevant experiences and practices while developing new solutions that work across different tax systems.”
Bangura’s selection is seen as both a personal milestone and a recognition of Sierra Leone’s growing role in global tax governance.
