NRA Engages Tax Consultants to Boost Compliance

Must Read

Freetown, 2nd April 2025 — As part of its ongoing efforts to enhance voluntary tax compliance, the National Revenue Authority (NRA), through its Domestic Tax Department (DTD), convened a strategic meeting with tax consultants. The session, led by Deputy Commissioner Edwin Conteh, aimed to encourage consultants to support their clients in fulfilling their tax obligations—particularly the filing of final income tax returns due by the end of April.

Deputy Commissioner Conteh emphasized the significance of timely filing and payment of the fifth income tax instalment, highlighting that the majority of businesses are required to meet this deadline.

Commissioner of the DTD, James Bobor Tengbeh, reiterated the critical role tax consultants play in bridging the gap between the Authority and taxpayers. He called on consultants to actively engage their clients and promote compliance, noting that while legal penalties exist for non-compliance, the Authority’s focus remains on encouraging timely and accurate filing.

The Commissioner also reminded consultants to lead by example in meeting their own tax obligations, stating that the NRA is intensifying its enforcement drive. He made it clear that the Authority will not entertain appeals for penalty waivers due to late filing. Taxpayers experiencing challenges were urged to contact the NRA promptly for assistance.

During the engagement, consultants acknowledged various difficulties faced by their clients, including limited awareness and issues with the online filing system. The DTD team addressed these concerns and reaffirmed their commitment to providing continued support and improving service delivery.

The meeting reflects the NRA’s broader strategy to partner with key stakeholders in strengthening the country’s tax culture and ensuring sustained revenue mobilization.
