On International Women’s Day: Magbaft Village Receives Support for Special Needs

Must Read

Magbaft village, a deprived community in the Western Area Rural Districts, has long struggled with limited access to basic amenities like safe drinking water, healthcare, and education. Among its residents are people living with disabilities, who face additional hardships, often living in makeshift structures and working tirelessly to make ends meet.

However, during the recent International Women’s Day celebration, a glimmer of hope emerged for the women and caregivers in this community, thanks to the efforts of Education and Development for Special Needs Children Sierra Leone.

The organization provided much-needed support and advocacy for the special needs women and caregivers of Magbaft, offering them empowerment opportunities and raising awareness about their challenges.

Kadijatu Ruth Kargbo, a parent and founder of Voice of Women Network, called on the government to invest in special needs schools and teacher training. She pledged her organization’s continued support to ensure that women and children living with disabilities receive the care and resources they need to thrive.

Yvette Cole Smith, Founder and Executive Director of Education and Development for Special Needs Children Sierra Leone, expressed pride in the community’s resilience. “I am proud of your endless efforts to care for your children and empower yourselves,” she said. Smith pledged to continue advocating for special needs individuals, focusing on providing skills training and other empowerment opportunities for caregivers.

The event also saw support from Samuel POV Macauley, Operations Manager at One Family People. He applauded the organization’s humanitarian efforts and promised to help the community with learning and teaching materials. He also took the opportunity to educate the villagers on the Disability Act, their rights, and the mandates of disability organizations in the country.

Education and Development for Special Needs Children Sierra Leone is dedicated to advocating for, raising awareness about, and empowering individuals with disabilities, particularly children, caregivers, and women.

The organization also works on promoting the use of sign language throughout the country, ensuring that people with disabilities are supported and recognized in all aspects of society.
