Sierra Leone Police Crime Statistic Report revealed that 1, 381 (one thousand three hundred and eighty one) police officers were investigated by the Complaint Discipline Internal Investigations Department (CDIID) in 2019.
The CDIID, which is a component of the Professional Standards Directorate at the Sierra Leone police, handles cases of police corruption, check police excesses and likewise investigate officers found violating the norms and principles of the organisation.
The report, which was launched on Tuesday, 9 June 2020, mentioned that 429 (four hundred and twenty nine) of the said cases were recorded at the Police Headquarter in Freetown, 344 (three hundred and forty four) in the Southern Region, 210 (two hundred and ten) in East Freetown, with Freetown West accounting for 203 (two hundred and three), 81 (eighty-one) for Northwest Region, 59 (fifty-nine) for Eastern and 55 (fifty-five) for the Northeast. However, the Police indicated in the report that they recorded a total of 75,729 (seventy five thousand, seven hundred and twenty nine) cases nationwide.
Three thousand two hundred and seventy six (3,276) of the aforementioned figures were prosecuted in all Magistrate Courts by the Legal and Justice Support Department of the police.
Meanwhile, 381 (three hundred and eighty one) cases were discharged, 160 (one hundred and sixty) cautioned and discharged, 60 (sixty) acquitted and discharged, 696 (six hundred and ninety six) cases fined/sentenced and 504 (five hundred and four) cases committed to the High Court.
The report further mentioned that that 5 (five) cases of the said figures were nullified by the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) or Attorney General and (1,478) one thousand four hundred and seventy eight cases are under trial in Magistrate Courts.
