Sierra Leone: 2,128 Crimes in 90 Days

The Sierra Leone Police (SLP) has presented its latest update on nationwide crime trends and key security incidents during its routine press briefing held at the Senior Police Officer’s Mess, Kingtom Police Barracks.

Addressing members of the Fourth Estate, the SLP Media Team disclosed a major case involving the theft of 156 solar batteries intended for the electricity project in Masiaka. According to the police, one suspect is currently in custody and assisting with ongoing investigations. The case is being closely monitored due to its implications for national infrastructure development.

In addition to individual case updates, the SLP released its crime statistics for the second quarter of 2025, offering a regional breakdown that reveals concerning trends in urban areas.

The Western Area, specifically Freetown East and Freetown West, recorded the highest number of cases across the country. Freetown East reported a total of 798 cases, of which 235 were classified as violent crimes. Freetown West followed with 478 cases. In contrast, Northern Eastern and Northern Western regions recorded 186 and 199 cases respectively. The Southern Region registered the lowest number of cases at 162, while the Eastern Region recorded 303 cases.

In total, the country recorded 2,128 cases during the period under review.

The SLP noted the urgent need for targeted crime prevention strategies, especially in high-risk zones such as Freetown East and West. These areas continue to report a surge in economic and property-related crimes, including burglary, assault, and theft.

The briefing emphasized the police’s commitment to transparency and public engagement through regular updates and collaboration with the media. The SLP reaffirmed its dedication to safeguarding communities and enhancing crime response mechanisms nationwide.

The Media Team concluded by calling on the public to remain vigilant, cooperate with law enforcement, and report suspicious activities to help curb criminal activity across the country.
