Sierra Leone’s Attorney General Backs Economic and Governance Reforms at World Bank and IMF Spring Meetings

Must Read

WASHINGTON, D.C., April 2025 – Sierra Leone’s Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Alpha Sesay, has reaffirmed the government’s strong commitment to economic, governance, and justice sector reforms during the ongoing World Bank and International Monetary Fund (IMF) Spring Meetings in Washington, D.C.

Speaking as part of the Sierra Leone delegation, led by Minister of Finance Ahmed Sheku Fantamadi Bangura and the Governor of the Bank of Sierra Leone, Sesay said his primary role is to provide legal support and ensure that all engagements, agreements, and discussions are consistent with Sierra Leone’s legal framework and development priorities.

“There are many discussions here with significant legal implications for our country,” Sesay noted. “My responsibility is to guide the delegation on legal matters surrounding economic reforms, potential agreements with development partners such as the World Bank and the IMF, and ensure that these are aligned with the nation’s broader governance goals.”

Beyond legal support, Sesay said he and the Minister of Public Administration and Political Affairs, Amara Kallon, are also participating in high-level discussions on governance reforms. Together, they presented President Julius Maada Bio’s vision for overhauling Sierra Leone’s public administration and justice sectors— a key pillar of the government’s “Big Five” development agenda.

Sesay emphasized that the reforms aim to make justice delivery more accessible and people-centered, rebuild public trust in the justice system, and strengthen the rule of law as a foundation for sustainable economic growth.

“Our focus is on making the justice sector work for the people, reinforcing good governance, and creating an environment that supports economic development,” Sesay pointed out.

The Attorney General underscored that these governance reforms are critical not only for building strong institutions but also for achieving long-term economic resilience in Sierra Leone.
