Nouakchott, Mauritania – Sierra Leone’s women’s national team made history on Friday, May 31, 2025, defeating defending champions Senegal 1–0 in the WAFU A Women’s Championship final to claim the country’s first-ever regional title.

Captain Salamatu Kamara converted a 68th-minute penalty to seal the win at the Olympic Stadium in Nouakchott. The goal was enough to down a strong Senegalese side and spark celebrations among fans back home.
Goalkeeper Hannah Juana was once again the standout performer. Her fourth consecutive Woman of the Match performance earned her the Best Player of the Tournament award, an exceptional achievement for a goalkeeper at this level.

But the post-match mood wasn’t all celebratory. Several players criticized the Sierra Leone government for failing to support the team financially and morally during the tournament. Their message was clear— victory was theirs, but it came despite official neglect.
