SLAJ President Urges Lawyers’ Groups to Pursue Genuine Reconciliation

Must Read

Ahmed Sahid Nasralla, President of the Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ), has called on the newly formed Lawyers’ Society of Sierra Leone and the Sierra Leone Bar Association (SLBA) to work towards meaningful reconciliation, stressing the importance of unity within the legal profession for the nation’s democratic stability.

Speaking at the inaugural Annual General Meeting of The Lawyers’ Society of Sierra Leone, on Thursday 20th February 2025, Nasralla acknowledged the legal fraternity’s critical role in upholding democracy, justice, and the rule of law.

However, he expressed concern over the divisions that have led to the formation of the new body, warning that such fragmentation within the legal profession poses a national concern.

“A strong and united legal fraternity is essential to safeguarding human rights and ensuring that the rule of law is not subject to political convenience,” he stated, emphasizing that a divided legal profession risks allowing the justice system to be influenced by partisan politics.

He urged both organizations to prioritize reconciliation, not for individual interests but for the greater good of Sierra Leone’s justice system.

Drawing parallels between the media and the legal profession, the Nasrallah noted that both fields face challenges of external interference and political pressure.

He reaffirmed SLAJ’s commitment to press freedom, freedom of expression, and the rule of law, urging legal professionals to stand firm in protecting these principles.

Nasralla also called for stronger collaboration between journalists and lawyers, arguing that their shared mission—to hold power accountable and uphold democracy—makes them natural allies.

He stressed the need for legal and media professionals to work together in exposing corruption, defending the voiceless, and ensuring justice reaches all corners of the country.

Beyond advocating for change through statements and criticism, he encouraged lawyers to engage in meaningful dialogue and solution-oriented advocacy.

“If we are truly committed to addressing lapses in governance and tackling national issues, we must prioritize active participation, collaboration, and respectful negotiations,” he asserted.

He concluded by urging the legal profession to seize this moment as an opportunity to rebuild trust and reaffirm its commitment to ethical practice and national service.

He encouraged the gathering to reflect on their role in strengthening democracy and ensuring justice remains impartial and independent.
