SLFA Sets New Date for Reconvened Ordinary Congress Amid Ongoing Leadership Turmoil

Must Read

The Sierra Leone Football Association (SLFA) has announced a new date for its Ordinary Congress, now scheduled to reconvene on Saturday, April 26, 2025, at the CATCO International Hotel on Wilkinson Road in Freetown.

This follows the abrupt suspension of the original session on April 5, which was derailed after SLFA President Thomas Daddy Brima exited the venue without prior notice, preventing the Congress from proceeding. Despite the presence of a majority of delegates, the session was declared void under Article 37.3 of the SLFA Statutes, which grants the President sole authority to convene and preside over Congress.

The walkout occurred amid heightened tensions following the release of President Brima, Acting Secretary-General Mohamed Benson Bawoh, and Finance Officer Ibrahim Bah from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), after their detention in connection with a months-long corruption investigation by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).

In a public statement dated April 24, 2025, the SLFA attributed the postponement of the April 5 session to “uncontrollable safety and security concerns” and assured stakeholders that, following extensive consultations with authorities, all necessary measures have now been implemented to ensure a secure environment for the reconvened Congress.

The association reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding the democratic process and upholding the integrity of its operations. It also confirmed that all media arrangements remain unchanged, including the original list of accredited journalists, with no additional entries to be accepted.

The Ordinary Congress is expected to tackle critical issues, including the approval of revised statutes, committee ratifications, and preparations for the upcoming Elective Congress, which will shape the future leadership of Sierra Leonean football.

The SLFA thanked its membership and stakeholders for their patience and continued support as it works to restore stability and credibility within the organization.
