Sierra Leone’s Teaching Service Commission (SLTSC) has announced a National Teacher Registration Exercise, fulfilling its mandate under the 2011 TSC Act. A statement released on Friday confirmed the upcoming registration process.
The mandatory registration will take place from Friday, March 14, 2025, to Monday, March 31, 2025. During this period, designated focal persons will visit schools nationwide to collect data on individuals currently engaged in teaching.
This initiative is a crucial step toward establishing a regulated and professional teaching workforce, aligning with national education objectives and Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4c. The registration will cover all individuals teaching in public and private institutions, including Pre/Primary, Junior Secondary, Senior Secondary, and Technical/Vocational schools.
A key objective of this exercise is to create a comprehensive teacher database that will support workforce planning, deployment, and succession management. With this data, the Commission aims to ensure the equitable distribution of qualified teachers, especially in underserved and remote areas, ultimately enhancing learning outcomes.
All classroom teachers, whether on the government payroll or not, in public or private schools, must complete the registration. Teachers currently receiving a government salary must present their qualification certificates, birth certificates of their children, national ID card, NASSIT card, bank details, and letter of appointment if available. Those who are not on the payroll must provide their qualification certificates, birth certificates of their children, and national ID card.
The SLTSC urges all classroom teachers, whether on the government payroll or not, in public or private schools, to participate in this compulsory registration.
SLTSC also mandated that all teachers report to their respective duty stations with specific documentation, stressing that teachers who are currently on the payroll are required to present a comprehensive set of documents that includes their qualification certificates, birth certificates of their children, national ID cards, NASSIT cards, bank details, and appointment letters if available.
Also, teachers who are not on the payroll are required to provide their qualification certificates, children’s birth certificates, and national ID cards.
Teachers who have already registered with the SLTSC are exempt from this process. SLTSC also warned that failing to comply with the registration requirement will lead to individuals being barred from teaching in classrooms.
