Freetown, Sierra Leone, June 2, 2025 – Two people have been confirmed dead following the collapse of a three-storey building under construction at Pentagon, off Regent Road in Lumley. The incident occurred around 2:00 PM on Sunday, June 1.
Sierra Leone’s National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA) mentioned in a statement that the Agency responded swiftly after receiving an emergency alert and immediately launched a joint search and rescue operation with the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces (RSLAF), the Sierra Leone Police (SLP), and the Freetown City Council (FCC).

Initial reports indicated that six workers were on-site when the building gave way. Four managed to escape with various injuries. However, the contractor and one worker remained trapped under the rubble. After nearly 12 hours of non-stop rescue efforts, both men were found dead in the early hours of Monday morning.
The NDMA confirmed that the bodies were recovered around 1:00 AM, despite challenging conditions. The operation was supported by heavy machinery and lighting provided by private construction firms, including the Gento Group of Companies and Paviport. Gento Group CEO, Mohamed Gento Kamara, was present at the scene and directly involved in the effort.

NDMA also acknowledged the role of community volunteers and emergency responders, noting the coordination and commitment shown by all involved.
With no further signs of trapped individuals, the NDMA has officially ended the search and rescue phase. An investigation into the cause of the collapse is now underway.
