The United States has delivered 67,200 doses of the Mpox vaccine to Sierra Leone’s Ministry of Health, a contribution aimed at strengthening the country’s response to the disease. The vaccines were secured through GAVI, the Vaccine Alliance.
Sierra Leone has seen a sharp decline in Mpox cases, dropping from a peak of 200 daily infections in April to single digits by August. Officials attribute this progress to more than $2 million in U.S. assistance, combined with the efforts of the Ministry of Health, the National Public Health Agency, and frontline health workers.
Speaking at the handover ceremony, U.S. Embassy Chargé d’Affaires Jared Yancey said the vaccines would play an important role in sustaining the country’s progress. “Vaccines are a critical tool in stopping this outbreak. By strengthening prevention, protecting frontline workers, and reducing transmission, these doses bring us closer to achieving zero Mpox cases in Sierra Leone,” he said.
