On 21st March 2020, the Ministry of Transport and Aviation suspended flights in or out of Lungi Airport in a bid to help stop the emergence of COVID-19 into the country.
Since then, the economic impact on sectors whose operations rely on the aviation industry have been severely affected.
The water taxi industry that transports passengers to and from Lungi Airport is hurting. With passengers, no flights, there is basically no demand for the services of water taxis.
“The suspension of flights dismantled our operation, we appreciate the measures because it’s for our own safety, but financial wise, the suspension hit us badly, says Khalil Shaban, proprietor of Sea Bird Express in Murray Town.
Shaban said all of their boats are parked and cannot run because the airport is closed. “I am afraid, if things continue in this way we cannot keep 90-100 staff without working.”
Shaban said he is trying to predict how long the suspension will have impact on their operation and find a solution. “But, if I am unable to do so I will be left with no option but to cut down on staff.”
The management of Sea Coach Express, a water taxi service in Aberdeen, would not comment, but their boats quietly bobbed at anchor in the mouth of the Man O’ War Bay.
