Lawyers’ Society Condemns Edmond Alpha’s Appointment as ECSL Chief

Lawyers’ Society has criticized the recent appointment of Edmond Alpha as Chief Electoral Commissioner, calling for its reversal.

In a statement dated 21st February 2026, the society said the appointment by the Office of the President, despite objections from key stakeholders, undermines democratic principles and the Tripartite process designed to ensure national unity and electoral reforms.

The Lawyers’ Society warned that bypassing stakeholder engagement weakens public confidence in electoral governance and could cast doubt on the credibility of the 2028 elections.

It urged the guarantors of the Agreement for National Unity (Tripartite) to intervene and called on Parliament to withhold approval of the appointment.

The society emphasized that any new appointments to the Electoral Commission of Sierra Leone (ECSL) and the Political Parties Regulation Commission (PPRC) must reflect the will of the people.

The statement stressed that democracy depends on transparency, consultation, and adherence to the rule of law.
