Born and raised in the bustling community of Calaba Town in eastern Freetown, Christopher Cole never imagined that his passion for music and youth leadership would one day take him across continents and onto stages in Australia.
Today, known professionally as SLEEPNORDAE, the Sierra Leonean-born artist, entrepreneur, creative director and music executive is steadily building a reputation within Australia’s multicultural entertainment landscape while using music to promote African culture and tell stories rooted in his Sierra Leonean identity. The release of his debut album, SLEEP NOR DAE, marks the latest milestone in a journey that began nearly two decades ago in the streets of eastern Freetown.

Early beginnings in Calaba Town
Born at Regent Road Central and raised in Calaba Town, Cole developed an interest in music and leadership at a young age. During his years at Saint Edward’s Senior Secondary School, he became actively involved in student leadership and youth organisations. He later served as President of Conwards Club, A1 Society and Central Geez, youth groups that played influential roles in community engagement and social activities in eastern Freetown. Friends and colleagues remember him as a young organiser with a talent for bringing people together through entertainment, community events and youth-focused initiatives. His growing passion for music eventually led him into Sierra Leone’s entertainment industry, where he became widely known by the nickname “Ludacris.”
Building a music platform
In 2006, Cole founded DTP Records, an independent record label that sought to support emerging musical talent in Sierra Leone. The label became involved in artist development, music production and event promotion during a period when Sierra Leone’s contemporary music industry was experiencing rapid growth. Beyond music, he ventured into entrepreneurship by establishing a recording studio and operating Ludacris Telecentre, a business that provided communication services and entertainment rentals.
Throughout his career in Sierra Leone, he worked with several artists including the late Exit, Buberry, Innocent, Slim FBI, Black Snoop, Case The Treason, Bson, Bombastic, Godman, the late Tyres and ABM of GWK, among others. His contributions extended beyond recording music. He became a familiar face at entertainment events, serving as a master of ceremonies at major shows and later hosting radio entertainment programmes on SLBC Radio and Free Radio.
Taking Sierra Leone to the world
Cole’s ambitions eventually took him beyond Sierra Leone. After travelling and living in countries across Africa, Asia and the Middle East, including Ghana, South Africa, Indonesia, Japan and the United Arab Emirates, he settled in Sydney, Australia. The international exposure broadened his artistic outlook and helped shape a sound that combines Afropop, Afro-fusion, rap and contemporary African rhythms with global influences.

In Australia, SLEEPNORDAE has performed at multicultural festivals, community celebrations and African cultural events, including appearances at the National Multicultural Festival in Canberra, Africultures Festival, Refugee Week celebrations and Sierra Leone Independence commemorations. His performances have helped introduce Sierra Leonean music and culture to wider international audiences while strengthening cultural connections within the African diaspora.
More than a musician
While music remains at the centre of his career, SLEEPNORDAE has expanded his work into visual storytelling, creative direction and entrepreneurship. He directs and produces many of his own music videos, allowing him to maintain creative control over his artistic vision. His work has also extended into modelling, television commercials and film productions in Australia, where he has participated in several screen projects and commercial campaigns. He is also the founder of the SLEEPNORDAE Merchandise Brand, which offers clothing and lifestyle products inspired by his artistic identity.
Debut album reflects personal journey
At the heart of SLEEPNORDAE’s current work is his debut album, SLEEP NOR DAE, a project inspired by his personal experiences, faith, cultural heritage and journey through adversity. The album explores themes of resilience, ambition, identity and hope through a blend of Afropop and Afro-fusion sounds. Among its standout tracks is “GBAYNIAMA,” a Mende-language song celebrating cultural pride and community strength.

“Mi Life,” featuring Sierra Leonean artist Drizilik, reflects on hardship and perseverance, while “Hustle Everyday” delivers an energetic message encouraging determination and hard work. Other tracks such as “Shine,” “Oh Babe,” and “Judges 16:28” explore themes ranging from faith and personal growth to love and spiritual resilience. The album was produced and recorded by SLEEPNORDAE, with mixing completed at Sydney’s renowned Studios 301 by Grammy-nominated engineer Simon Cohen. Mastering was handled by veteran engineer Leon Zervos, whose credits include projects for internationally acclaimed artists such as Maroon 5, Muse, P!nk and Whitney Houston.
Representing Sierra Leone abroad
Despite building a career thousands of kilometres away from home, Cole says Sierra Leone remains central to his identity and creative vision. Through his music and visual productions, he seeks to showcase the country’s culture, talent and stories to global audiences. His music videos frequently incorporate African themes and imagery, while his collaborations connect artists from different countries and cultural backgrounds.

As Sierra Leonean artists continue to gain visibility on international platforms, SLEEPNORDAE’s journey reflects a broader story of African creatives using music, entrepreneurship and digital media to build global careers without losing connection to their roots. For the artist from Calaba Town, the mission remains simple: to use creativity as a bridge between cultures while carrying Sierra Leone’s flag onto the world stage.
